DO YOU KNOW A CHILD WITH A DISABILITY?

Registering a child with disabilities means that the child can access the benefits and services offered by JCPD. Registration also helps us to know what your child needs are and where he/she is located island-wide so that plans can be made to serve he/she better!     

What you need to register a child:

Collect the applicable forms listed below or you can download and print them. You will need to have forms completed by a medical doctor or health care professional who is competent to make an assessment, before coming in for an interview. For the registration interview you will need:

  1. A passport size photograph
  2. TRN
  3. National Identification (birth certificate, passport)

WHY YOU SHOULD REGISTER A CHILD WITH A DISABILITY?

It is important that you register a child with disabilities because you can access the benefits and services of the JCPD. Registration also helps us to know what your needs are and where persons with disabilities are located island-wide so that plans can be made to serve you better!

When you register we provide a Certificate of Registration. This certificate can be used to prove that someone is registered as a person with a disability and can access certain benefits. Persons with disabilities can also access concessionary bus fares in the Kingston Metropolitan Area and St. Catherine with this certificate.

BENEFITS OF REGISTERING A CHILD WITH JCPD

Registering a child with disabilities means that the child can access the benefits and services offered by JCPD. 

  • The JCPD provides each client with assessment and independent living skills through the Assessment & Guidance Centre.
  • The JCPD represent the rights of PWDs as advisors to both Government and private sector as well as the disabilities sector partners about issues on disabilities
  • Monitors the implementation of the Act by:
    •  Conducting Accessibility Audits including inspection of Buildings to ensure the environment is barrier-free
    •  investigation of complaints about discrimination against PWDs
    •  providing Legal Assistance to PWDs for matters of discrimination
  •  Assists with finding employment for persons with disabilities through our Job Placement Officer
  •  Provides Rehabilitation Grants for income-generating projects
  •  Assistance to ensure full educational opportunities including school fee assistance, books, etc.
  •  Provisions of scholarships to students with disabilities for tertiary level education through the annual Margaret Moody Scholarship programme
  •  Assists with the process of Income Tax Exemption under the Income Tax Act, for persons with disabilities
  •  Facilitates persons with disabilities who meet the required criteria to access the five percent (5%) allocation of housing solutions from the National Housing Trust
